What to bring
- Prior studies. The ultrasound, laboratory tests or any study done for this problem, even if they are months old. They save time and sometimes avoid repeating them.
- Medication list. Everything you take, with doses, including anticoagulants, aspirin, supplements and herbal products. It matters for surgery and for anesthesia.
- History. Prior surgeries, allergies, conditions such as diabetes or hypertension, and whether you smoke.
- Policy. If you come with insurance, the policy number and your identification. With that the office starts the coverage review.
- Your questions. Written down. They are forgotten in the visit.
What happens in the visit
I listen to the history, review the studies and examine you. With that, in most cases, we can say whether surgery is indicated. If another study is needed, I tell you and we see the result at a second visit.
If surgery is needed, I explain the procedure, the approach, the expected stay and the estimated time back at work. If surgery is not needed, I say so as well, and what follow-up makes sense.
What you leave with
- An answer on the indication.
- The quote in writing, with what it includes, what is left out, what can change it and its validity period.
- Preparation instructions, if you decide to schedule: fasting, preoperative studies, the anesthesia assessment and what to do with your medicines.
- Who to contact and how.
